A well-implemented ITIL framework can increase efficiency, reduce errors and improve system reliability and security. ITIL can be difficult to introduce, but it can make daily work less stressful and reduce downtime across the enterprise. Products can support the implementation, but ITIL also requires substantial training and buy-in from every stakeholder. The whole DevOps organization needs to be involved. These 20 steps outline an ITIL implementation for a Linux and AWS DevOps environment:
- Define the scope of the ITIL implementation by identifying the essential services, systems and processes to include.
- Identify the ITIL processes relevant to the DevOps environment, including incident management, change management and release management.
- Map the existing DevOps processes. Identify gaps and areas that need improvement to align with ITIL.
- Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the ITIL implementation in the DevOps environment.
- Assign roles and responsibilities for each ITIL process, including process owners and key stakeholders.
- Create a training plan so every team member understands the ITIL concepts and processes they use.
- Create a communication plan that keeps stakeholders informed when processes and procedures change.
- Implement a service desk tool to manage incident, change and release management.
- Create a service catalogue that defines the services the DevOps team offers and their service levels.
- Implement a configuration management tool to track and manage changes to system components.
- Create a change management process covering formal requests, approvals, testing and implementation.
- Implement a release management process covering version control, testing, deployment and rollback.
- Establish an incident management process covering reporting, prioritization, escalation and resolution.
- Implement a problem management process covering root cause analysis and remediation of recurring incidents.
- Create a service level management process that monitors and reports on service level agreements (SLAs) and service level objectives (SLOs).
- Implement a capacity management process that monitors and forecasts capacity and plans for future growth.
- Create an availability management process that monitors system availability and responds to incidents that affect it.
- Establish a security management process covering access management, vulnerability management and security incident response.
- Create a continual service improvement plan to monitor and improve ITIL processes in the DevOps environment.
- Review and update the ITIL processes regularly so they continue to meet DevOps needs and align with business goals.
