In my 20+ years of hiring, I've hired many outstanding professionals who went on to successful careers. I look for qualities that fit the organization, then use a multi-stage interview to draw them out. Early in the process, I ask whether the candidate brings something the group needs. Newsflash: technical skills are only part of the picture. Communication, attitude, self-knowledge and other intangibles count too. I use a mental checklist of these 20 qualities to shape my questions.
